We were approached by several of our power generation customers to find a better way to track tools, materials, weapons, personnel and processes in and out of critical areas of the plant, particularly in FME Zones. The tedious traditional and error-prone process of keeping time-consuming FME logs, tool logs, inventory and maintenance records was not entirely accurate or efficient; there had to be a better way. In September of 2007, we launched a formal project to automate manual and proprietary power station processes to minimize tool loss and the time required to process workers in and out of critical parts of a nuclear facility, while ensuring the integrity of the accountability procedures. Through this project process, Alphasource® identified and developed a key relationship with the grandfather of radio frequency identification (RFID) applications and integration, Northern Apex Corporation.
